What To Do When Your Luggage Goes Missing…

Your worst fear has happened…
You touched down feeling like That Girl, already on your way to becoming an IG vacation and boom… your checked luggage was left behind.

Whether it’s stuck in Atlanta or chillin’ in Dubai while you’re in Mykonos, here’s how to handle missing or delayed luggage without losing your mind.

First things first, get a tracker.
Whether it be an AirTag or a similar item, if you plan to check a bag, having a tracker is a must!

“Ok, so what do I do if my luggage is lost?”

Heading to the Airport

Step 1: Don’t Panic, Go File a Claim Immediately!

First, take a deep breath. Then, check and double-check the carousel. If your bag’s really not there, it’s go-time.

Head straight to the airline’s baggage desk before you leave the airport. Give them a full description—better yet, show them a photo of your bag (which you should always take before checking it).

Add a bright luggage tag or funky scarf before your trip so it’s easier to spot and describe.

Step 2: Keep Those Receipts!!!

Need to grab a toothbrush, face wash, and a fresh outfit because your essentials are MIA? Buy what you need—within reason—and save every single receipt.

The Department of Transportation requires airlines to reimburse you for “reasonable, verifiable, actual incidental expenses.” That means yes to basic toiletries and PJs, but no to splurging at luxury stores for a whole new fit.

If they lose your bag, they owe you your baggage fee back, too. Don’t forget to ask.

Step 3: Follow that Bag!

Got an AirTag, Tile, or Samsung Smart Tag? Activate it & start tracking. Some airlines like Delta, United, American, Breeze, and JetBlue now integrate Apple’s Find My tool with your reservation.

This means you might know where your bag is before they do. And nothing says “I’m not the one” like telling the airline your bag is in Terminal C before they figure it out.

Step 4: Follow Up! Follow Up! Follow Up!

Don’t just wait around hoping they call you. Airlines have different policies for reimbursements, so stay in touch. This doesn’t mean calling incessantly. It means that if 24 hours have passed and you haven’t heard anything, follow – up.

  • Make sure to get everything in writing.
  • Ask for the names of customer service agents you speak with.
  • Visit their website’s missing luggage section to stay informed.

This is not the time to be shy, friend. Be persistent, yet polite and either get your coins or your bag back.

Step 5: Check Other Insurance for Backup

Once your bag is either found or declared officially lost, check in with your travel insurance, and even homeowners or renters insurance.

Your other insurance policies may cover extra costs the airline doesn’t, but only do so after you’ve filed everything with the airline. Don’t skip that first step.

At the end of the day…

I know, it sucks. But, stay cute & stay calm, it will all work out in the end. You spent all that time curating your vacation looks, and now you’re shopping for undies in a foreign pharmacy. But here’s the truth: Your peace is more important than your missing luggage.

You’re still the main character.

You’re still making memories.

That carry-on lifestyle might be looking real good next time. 👀
