Hey Traveling Black Women! Let me tell you about my journey to a place where the heart of Africa beats the loudest – Kenya. My trip, meticulously planned and facilitated by the Magical Kenya Tourism Board, was nothing short of extraordinary. From the bustling streets of Nairobi to the serene landscapes of Samburu and the iconic Maasai Mara, every moment was a story waiting to be told. If Kenya isn’t on your travel list yet, we’ll change that by the end of this post. Keep reading for the ultimate Kenya tour itinerary that promises not just sights, but transformative experiences.
The Adventure Begins… Nairobi
Our journey kicked off with a comfortable flight aboard Kenya Airways from JFK to Nairobi. Our base in Nairobi was the stylish Tribe Hotel, a perfect blend of contemporary luxury and traditional touches, making it an excellent start to our Kenyan experience.
—Giraffe Center: Up Close with Gentle Giants
One of our first stops in Nairobi was the Giraffe Center. It was pretty dope being eye-to-eye with those majestic creatures, feeding them, and dodging those long black tongues.
The Giraffe Center in Nairobi, Kenya, is dedicated to the care and conservation of the Rothschild giraffes. This species is one of the most endangered subspecies of giraffe, with only a few hundred left in the wild. By breeding them in a protected environment, the center helps increase their population. Then, once the giraffes reach a certain age or once the population at the center is deemed sufficient, some of the giraffes are relocated to other parts of Kenya, including various national parks and reserves, where they can live in more natural, wild conditions.
–A Dive into History: The Nairobi Museum
The Nairobi Museum offered us an engaging look into Kenya’s rich history and cultural heritage. From prehistoric artifacts to contemporary art, the museum serves as a vibrant testament to the resilience and diversity of the Kenyan people. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to delve deeper into the soul of Kenya.
Lamu: A Cultural Gem
Next on our Kenya tour itinerary was Lamu, an enchanting Island that has preserved their culture over generations. Our stay at Majlis Hotel was nothing short of magical, with stunning views of the Indian Ocean meeting Swahili architecture.
The highlight? The Lamu Cultural Festival. Aboard the Tusitri Dhow, we watched the traditional Dhow races, a spectacle that captures the essence of Lamu’s rich maritime heritage. This festival is not just about the races; it’s also a celebration of art, music, and the spirit of the Swahili people. Being a part of it was an amazing cultural experience!!
Samburu: Where Nature Meets Serenity
Our journey continued to the rugged terrains of Samburu, a region that’s a stark contrast to the city’s hustle and the coast’s calm. At Surana Buffalo Springs, we found a beautiful balance of nature and relaxation. This wasn’t just another stay; it was an immersion into the wilderness.
The highlight here? Tree planting. This simple act of giving back to nature was profoundly impactful, reminding us of the delicate balance between humans and the natural world.
Maasai Mara: The Crown Jewel
Then came the moment we had all been eagerly anticipating – the Maasai Mara. Staying at Mara Napa Luxury Camp was an experience in itself, being the first and currently only Maasai-owned property on the reserve. This fact added layers of authenticity and respect for the local culture to our visit.
—Soaring High: Hot Air Balloon Safari
A hot air balloon safari at dawn offered us a bird’s eye view of the Mara’s breathtaking landscapes and the great migration below (depending on the season). It’s an unparalleled experience, floating silently over the savannah as the sun rises, illuminating the land in hues of gold.
—-Daily Game Drives: The Heartbeat of the Mara
While on the Mara, our daily game drives were nothing short of spectacular. Each day brought new discoveries – from majestic lions basking in the early morning light to elephants roaming freely. The Maasai Mara is a testament to the untamed beauty of Africa, a place where wildlife and nature coexist in a delicate balance. The Maasai Mara experience makes Kenya my favorite place in the world to visit.
